Greene King has appointed Clair Preston-Beer as its next chief executive, making her the first woman to lead the 227-year-old pub operator and brewer. She takes over in March 2027, succeeding Nick Mackenzie after nearly eight years at the helm.
The decision lands at a strategic moment. The Bury St Edmunds-based company launched its strategy to 2030 earlier, which sets out further investment across its pub estate, brewery operations and digital capabilities. Preston-Beer's current remit — commercial, digital and technology functions — maps almost exactly onto that agenda. That's not a coincidence. She took up the chief digital and commercial officer role earlier in 2026.
Who is Clair Preston-Beer?
She knows the business from the inside. Preston-Beer joined Greene King in 2020 as managing director of its pubs division, then became chief operating officer in 2024 before stepping into her current post this year. That's three senior roles in six years — an unusually steep internal ladder.
Her earlier career sits in retail and leisure, with more than 27 years of experience in total. Sixteen-plus of those were at Whitbread, where she held senior positions at Costa Coffee, latterly as managing director for its Middle East and Asia operations. She also sits on the board of the British Beer and Pub Association and has held non-executive directorships at FTSE 350 companies.
What is Mackenzie leaving behind?
Mackenzie steps down at the end of February 2027 but stays on the Greene King board to support the transition. His tenure covered the biggest structural shift in the company's modern history: the £2.7bn acquisition by Hong Kong-based CK Asset Holdings in 2019 and the transition to private ownership.
Other markers of his time include:
- The expansion of the Hickory's restaurant business
- Sustained investment in digital services
- The construction of a new brewery in Bury St Edmunds
Mackenzie said: "It has been the privilege of my career to lead Greene King for nearly eight years. This is a very special company, with very special people who care deeply about their teams, customers and the communities they serve up and down the country."
He added: "I am delighted that Clair will be taking the reins and having worked closely with her for the last six years, I know she shares my passion for the industry and is an exceptionally qualified successor to take Greene King forward and deliver the next chapter in its long and illustrious history."
What does the new CEO plan to do?
Preston-Beer's language is blunt about the trading backdrop. "We have an ambitious strategy in place that is focused on growing share in a challenging environment," she said. "We will continue to strengthen our core brands and ensure our digital services become central to the everyday experience of our valued customers."
Her appointment statement leaned on identity as much as strategy: "I'm honoured to be appointed as CEO of Greene King. I love our pubs, I love our people and I am passionate about ensuring they remain the ultimate social host for generations to come."
One priority stands out for anyone tracking the sector. She said investment in data and artificial intelligence would remain a priority, with the aim of making pubs easier to operate, improving customer experiences and supporting better-informed business decisions. In plain terms: use machine analysis of sales and traffic data (AI applied to operational decision-making) to strip cost and guesswork out of running a pub.
What does the owner think?
CK Asset Holdings, the controlling shareholder since 2019, endorsed the move. Gerald Ma, executive committee member at CK Asset Holdings, said Preston-Beer had played an important role in shaping Greene King's strategy and operational development through her previous leadership positions, and that the company was well positioned for its next phase of growth under her.
Why the scale matters
Greene King employs approximately 38,000 people and operates around 2,500 pubs, restaurants and hotels across the UK. Any change at the top of a business that size ripples through suppliers, landlords and high streets. A digital-first chief executive, installed to run a 2030 growth strategy in a tough consumer market, signals where the company thinks the next competitive edge lies — and it isn't only in the beer.
